Hear What Kalimba Magic Customers Say About Hugh Tracey Kalimbas
The Hugh Tracey Kalimbas Are My Personal Favorites. But don't take my word.
In 1986, I bought my first kalimba - a Hugh Tracey Treble. An Alto followed a few years later. I have loved and cherished my Hugh Tracey Kalimbas. In 2005 I got the chance to share my kalimba love with the world, and Kalimba Magic was born.
I have a huge shipment of Hugh Tracey Kalimbas coming in a few weeks, and I am rounding up the capital to cover the expense. Which means that I am offering a huge 25% discount on every Hugh Tracey Kalimba.
But before you purchase, would you like to hear what some of my customers have to say about their Hugh Tracey Kalimba purchase from Kalimba Magic?
First off, Hugh Tracey was an Englishman who moved to Africa in 1920 at the age of 17. After arriving in Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe) he quickly became obsessed with learning about traditional African music. In 1954, he founded the company African Musical Instruments (AMI), which still makes Hugh Tracey Kalimbas today. Hugh Tracey's kalimba journey was born of the love of African music. My own kalimba journey dovetails with that of Hugh Tracey, and I have worked consistently for 15 years to promote and expand the Hugh Tracey Kalimbas. I have invented several new kalimba models and I have written dozens and dozens of instructional books and ebooks for these instruments.
But what do other people say about the Hugh Tracey Kalimbas? When people write me with a shining endorsement, I save those comments... and here are a few of them:
"Just WOW!!! I just hit the jackpot with my new Box Pentatonic kalimba! Thank you so much for this beautiful gem! Stunning is exactly right! I was so thrilled when I unzipped it’s case. This instrument is magnificent to look at…….And the sound is so beautiful!! I just can’t thank you enough for sending me such an awesome companion! I am so in love with this instrument. It will be by my side always! And thank you so very much for including another one of your CDs. It is truly magical and inspiring! I love it! You are such a great teacher and beautiful spirit. Your kindness and energy shine through your words."
Thank you, Eunice in Nevada
The pentatonic kalimbas have fewer tines, with more space between them, physically and harmonically. This kalimba layout gives you more freedom. It is a great instrument to jam and improvise on.
At Kalimba Magic, we are always looking into new ways of setting up the Hugh Tracey Kalimbas. We can tune to any key you want or need. The Bb Trebles and D Trebles are examples of how we are evolving the Hugh Tracey into the future.
“I got my Hugh Tracey D Treble kalimba and I absolutely love it. It’s exactly what I wanted - thank you so much!”

Most kalimbas are diatonic, meaning they just play the notes "Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do" in one particular key. The Hugh Tracey Chromatic Kalimbas have the diatonic scale on the front side, played by the thumbs... and the chromatic notes on the back side, playing by the fingers. It is a challenging design, but as the instrument defaults to a simple scale if you use just the front side, you can learn the backside notes gradually.
"My Alto Chromatic Kalimba arrived yesterday and I must say it I am super impressed. I am a recording artist and plan on using this as part of my live show and album creation. Thanks!"Kevin in Illinois
The Hugh Tracey Chromatic Treble has 17 notes in the key of C on the front... meaning it is set up just like the new wave if inexpensive Chinese kalimbas... but with 17 notes in the key of B on the back side. Many players of the Chinese kalimbas advance to the Treble Chromatic to play more complex music. They have been so popular they sold out... but they will be returning in mid November and you can pre-order them now.
"Hello Mark ! I wanted to let you know I received my chromatic treble kalimba last week, I wanted to thank you so much for the service you provide selling these beyond-beautiful-sounding instruments ... I am in LOVE with this little music box and it took me no time at all to figure it out .. I slightly angled the back tines as you suggested ... I learned to find the right chromatic tines blindly after becoming familiar with the “feeling” of them and experimenting. I play worship music mostly on it and it sounds like heaven, so soothing, healing and whimsical . I just love all the harmony, chords and glissandos I can play on it ... it’s like a tiny harp. Where has this been all my life! Truly something I shall cherish for the rest of my life.... A big Thank you Mark!!! I send you best wishes ."

"I just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying the B-flat treble Hugh Tracey kalimba I purchased from you. I received it yesterday and played it about an hour last night. It is much better than the one I purchased from Amazon. The one from Amazon is not bad, especially after I tuned it down to Bb. But the one purchased from you is superior to it in tone and playability. Thanks for provided such good products and services to kalimba neophytes like me."
All the best, Allen in Georgia

“Dear Mark, I just want you to know how thankful I am to have found your website and the books you have written. They are written in such a way that I feel that I’m being taught very precisely, methodically and easily the workings of the Kalimba. Thank you for being such a good teacher of this delightful music. I for one am very grateful. Best wishes, hope your day goes well.”

“The PDF eBook “Easy Alto” you downloaded to me is great. Now I am very happy to do my first kalimba practice. The next time I buy kalimba, I will definitely buy it from your shop. Thanks”.

Our downloads are some of the most precious gems of kalimba instruction anywhere short of sitting down with a kalimba master. They are especially nice to work with: view the high quality PDF on your computer screen, and with the click of a mouse, you can access the sound files and hear how each song is supposed to go. You can even listen to all the songs in the download before you decide which one you want to learn. As you get good at playing a particular song, you can read the notes off the tablature, and play along with the recording. We have downloads for the beginner, for intermediate players, and for advanced players.
To many people, the kalimba can be at the center of their personal musical journey. It is truly a magical instrument. The real question is: are you worth it? Of course you are. You are worth getting a better kalimba to make your kalimba journey sparkle with magic and possibility. I have been playing the Hugh Tracey Kalimba for 34 years, and not for one day have I regretted having the Hugh Tracey kalimba in my life.
"When I first found Kalimba Magic a few years ago and saw the Alto, it was love at first sight. After I listened to ALL the recordings/videos I decided to bring a Kalimba into my life. The problem was that I didn’t believe I could afford a Hugh Tracy at the time. Turning that problem into a solution, I salvaged a piece of mahogany from a furniture maker’s scrap pile and made my own Kalimba. It sits next to me now, and I have a deep connection with it. As I carried and played my homemade Kalimba, I had the pleasure of playing a Hugh Tracy Alto twice. First time was last year while on a cross country train ride (one Kalimba, two players! We had sooo much fun and attracted a crowd with our jamming and laughter). Second time was last month at a song circle where some musically trained person was literally banging on this “thing” and it still created heavenly music. I called it out by name because of it’s signature look and obvious quality. My turn came to play the Alto (some alternate tuning) and with others singing and harmonizing over it... the way the melodies just rolled off the tines like fresh churned butter... I was entranced and committed to buying one on the spot. So much has shifted since Kalimba Magic come into my life. I moved across country, found a healthy living arrangement, landed an amazing full time job as a Waldorf teacher, and am finally feeling financially secure enough to invest in this incredible instrument. Even more importantly, I shifted my mindset to prioritize bringing a high quality instrument into my life so I may level up the quality of musical medicine I bring into the lives of those around me. I appreciate your commitment to helping put quality instruments into peoples’ hands over all these years. Thank you for all the work you have done to support the world of Kalimbas."
Here is a tip. All of those Chinese made kalimbas in the key of C? They are all modeled on the 17-Note Hugh Tracey Treble Kalimba, except they are tuned a bit differently. Normally the Treble Kalimba has a low note of B, but is tuned to the key of G (that is, the lowest note is the 3rd of the scale).
However, if you have learned on the 17-Note kalimba in C and want to step up to the next level of instrument, you will want your Hugh Tracey Treble kalimba tuned the same way as you have learned on. You can purchase either the "Hugh Tracey Treble" or the "Hugh Tracey Bb Treble", but select the tuning to be "C". Our instructional materials work with a kalimba with six painted tines, while the Chinese instructional materials work with different tines painted, and only five painted. You can also request either the 6-painted-notes (Kalimba Magic style) or the 5-painted-notes (Chinese style).
The Alto Kalimba, while physically larger, but only 15 notes, and in a different key, is actually set up in a very similar way. Just as harmonicas in different keys are set up to have the same "degree of the scale" in the same holes, most songs that you play on a 17-Note Kalimba in C can be played with the exact same thumb strokes on the tines of the 15-Note Alto Kalimba.
