If you play music long enough, you will learn that not all musical moments are created equally. Sometimes, the music is magical. It is a blessing to get to experience magical musical moments in any capacity… but it is truly amazing when a magical musical moment just happens to you.
It doesn’t matter if you are a high functioning musician or a novice player. If you play long enough in a sitting, you might find that your playing is getting better and better. I love it when I can feel my mind and body learning, improving… sometimes day by day, but also sometimes hour by hour, or even minute by minute.
And so you can be in a place where you aren’t that great a player, but you work it, and work it, with your mind and body, and you get to a place where the magical music is coming through you.
Yes, that happens on the piano or violin or guitar. But on these instruments, there is actually a lot of more work to do, many hours of practice before the musical magic starts to flow.
With kalimba, the odds are tilted toward success. All the wrong notes have been removed from the instrument. The remaining notes are arranged in such a way as to suggest certain songs, certain riffs. And then if you listen to the kalimba, it will teach you.
Follow its lead.
Sooner or later, it will amaze you. Or rather, you will amaze yourself, that you were able to channel some Kalimba Magic.
Once you know what that unexpected musical magic feels like, try to cultivate it. Work towards that magic coming through in each of your playing sessions… and for more and more of your play sessions.
