SaReGaMa’s Lotus Tuned Karimba

SaReGaMa is the stage name of a new age musical artist. About 15 years ago, someone gifted him a Hugh Tracey African-tuned Karimba, but it was out of tune. He set out on a path exploring the tunings it was capable of. Every week or two, he would take the instrument apart and put it back together again with a different key, a different tuning, and a different note organization.

SaReGaMa’s Air Tuned Karimba

The Air tuning is pretty interesting. The three lowest notes, G, A, and D… are the 4th, the 5th, and the 1 or root of D. This kalimba plays in D minor. The other odd thing is the high D, which is present on both the left and the right. In fact, that middle D is really out of place… which makes it interesting to use. It is nice to have that D right next to the lower D on the lower row, and the two high D tines, being on left and right, makes it possible to trill. All of these work to emphasize the importance of D. Comes with a short 12-page download explaining WTH is going on with this tuning!
